AdmirAsian Award Recipient Gives More to the Community
Dr. Chirantan Ghosh Gives $10,000 for Outstanding Youth Scholarship

Des Moines, Iowa (October 11, 2007) The Iowa Asian Alliance (IAA) announced today that Dr. Chirantan Ghosh has donated $10,000 for the creation of the AdmirAsian Outstanding Youth Scholarship to be added to the Alliance's annual awards. Dr. Ghosh will present the first Anna Purna Ghosh Scholarship of $1,000 to this year's AdmirAsian Outstanding Youth on Saturday, October 13 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Meadows Events and Conference Center at Prairie Meadows in Altoona.

Ghosh created the scholarship fund in honor of his mother Anna Purna Ghosh who was born in Calcutta , India in 1923. Typical of that time, Anna had a 4th grade level education and got married at the age of 14. Dr. Ghosh is the 9th children out of 10 children. "My mother believed and lived her life on the principle that true education comes not just from receiving diplomas, attending schools and colleges; but also from serving the neediest, poorest and most distressed which ultimately allows us to 'KNOW THYSELF'."

Dr. Ghosh will be presenting the first Anna Purna Ghosh Scholarship to Kristy Huynh, a senior at Iowa State University in the process of applying to medical school. Huynh's devotion to those needing health care stemmed from having to interpret for her mother's medical appointments during high school. On her application to medical school, Huynh wrote: "I want to be a physician--a role where healing is more than a job; where caring and compassion should be a daily practice."

Ghosh has long shown his leadership and support of the community through donation of his time and resources. A year ago Ghosh received the highest AdmirAsian Achievement Award—the Person of the Year Award—for his holistic treatments of cancer patients and for his humanitarian efforts to feed the homeless and provide access to technology for the entire community of Cedar Rapids .
